DCDS SAILING TEAM

General Information

The DCDS sailing team is the newest sports team at Country Day, and also one of the most interesting. The team sails from the start of school in June to mid-November, then from mid-March to June. We have traveled to many destinations for regattas, including many yacht clubs in Chicago, Grosse Isle, and Traverse City. A lot of students like the sailing team because it is both fall and spring, and therefore, counts for two blue points, the sport requirement for the year. Also, the team is the ONLY team that is intramural, 6-12 grade sport.

Regattas

Most weekends in the fall and some weekends in the spring, select members of our team go to travel regattas.

A Team usually consists of:

  • 2 420 Skippers
  • 2 420 Crews
  • 2 420 Alternates
  • 1 Laser Sailor

The team either all rides in a school vehicle driven by our coach to travel regattas, or the individual sailor can choose to ride with their parent(s) if they are also going to the event.

Normal Practice Schedule

  • - - Get Dressed
  • - - Rig Boats and Launch
  • - - Practice
  • - - De-Rig Boats
  • - - Get Changed and Eat Snack/Chalk Talk

The normal practice for the team starts with our coach Eric Ellison giving us a "chalk talk", which is where he explains what drills and activities we will be doing for the day. Then, he assigns boats and we go sailing. Some of the drills we do on the water include tacking and gybing, sailing around buoys to practice boat handling, and practice races between boats.
