A special honor of spirit and teamwork goes to Sailesh Yellayi '18 Crew, who stepped up to Crew for De La Salle. Without his
participation, the other skipper could not enter our regatta. Sailesh wore his DCDS uniform and finished in 11th place.
Our weather was cold but dry, and winds held steady at 15 knots. We saw many pirate flags flying on our fleet, representing our strong
DCDS finish. Congratulations!
The DCDS Sailing Team has been preparing for many important regattas. Now it shows that hard work, training, and coaching has paid off. We took our Friday practice before the State Championship to Grosse Ile Yacht Club. Assistant Coach Peter Polgar met the team, and Salvatore Mancuso '13, Skipper/Laser, Reed Lorimer '14, Skipper and Peter Hoglund '14 Crew, along with Wade Lorimer '16 Skipper and Thomas Frikker '15 Crew, on the water. We had cold, rain and 30 knot winds with gusts, but this group sailed with perfection. Saturday for the event, we had cold grey skies, with ocassional sun, holding mostly steady winds at 15 knots.
The 420 A Division worked hard, coming just short of 4 points for the win, while 420 B captured the State Title. Salvatore Mancuso '13 faced the strong competition in the Laser Division, placing above most impressive competition in several individual races. The total efforts of the whole team won the Detroit Country Day Sailing Team the State Championship Title!
The team of Salvatore Mancuso '13, Peter Hoglund '14, Reed Lorimer '14 and Thomas Frikker '15 represented Detroit Country Day for the National Qualifier this weekend. There was a strong competitive presence with 24 teams trying to secure one the the six spots to enter. Although we did not qualify, we look forward to the next opportunity to do so. The team improved on skills, and worked together well.
The winds were 10-15 knots with 2-4 foot waves. On Saturday, the sky was overcast, and Sunday showed more sun. The fall colors were at peak brillance. We continue to improve as a team, in ability and spirt. Good job all.
We are proud to say we entered eleven sailors to this event!
Wade Lorimer '16 Skipper and
Austin Rivera '13 Crew
Grant Kojaian Skipper and
Austin Shepard '16 Crew
Grant Gustafson '15 Skipper and
Aidan Darby '16 Crew
Cole Wiand '16 Skipper and
Connagh Rowley '18 Crew
Matthew Worpell '14 and
Jason Liu '15 Crew
And also single handed Skipper Brian Liu '18 in Opti Class.
The wind and wave conditions caused the event on Saturday to be cancelled. When conditions improved, the team went out to build on skills and teamwork on the
water. Sunday proved to be succesful as Wade and Austin took the 2nd place medals overall. We are proud of our team and the improvements they have made. A special recognition goes to Grant Kojaian '16, who supported his team and team members both on and off the water.
Congratulations to all!
The travel team of Salvatore Mancuso '13, Reed Lorimer '14, Thomas Frikker '15, Wade Lorimer '16 and Aidan Darby '16 competed at the Chicago Yacht Club. The fall weather and wind conditions were beautiful. Each division completed 13 races, a total of 26 races for the weekend. The winds were calm on Saturday, but built to 20 knots with 4 foot waves on Sunday.
The travel team of Thomas Frikker '15, Veronica Agne '15, Jason Liu '15, Grant Gustafson '15, Cole Wiand '16, Aidan Darby '16, Matthew Worpell '14 and Austin Rivera '13 participated in this wonderful event. With strong winds of 10 knots gusting to 25 knots, our DCDS representatives did a fine job controlling their boats and finishing every race. A special recognition goes to Aidan Darby '16, who changed divisions and raced every race on Saturday!
Coach Eric did a fine job teaching new skills to our team, and along with supporting members from DCDS, made several dramatic rescues of non-DCDS team sailors. We commend our coach, and our sailors for standing on the dock and shore, ready to provide any assistance to others who needed our help. It shows skill, compassion, and support from our team to others in need. Good Job DCDS!

DCDS had amazing results, 1st for Team 1, 2nd for Team 2, 11th for Team 3, and 12th for Team 4. Individual top 3 finishes go to Team 2A for 2nd, Team 1A in 3rd, and Team 1B, who took 1st place! All 16 members of the team had wonderful improvments! Congratulations DCDS.
The travel team of Salvatore Mancuso '13, Peter Hoglund '14, Reed Lorimer '14, Thomas Frikker '15, and Wade Lorimer '16 represented DCDS at the Kick Off Regatta in Chicago, September 7-9. 2012.
Nearly the entire team was present last weekend in Traverse City, and we had great support from many of the parents too. We departed after school, and credit Kevin Yi '13 and his mom, and Veronica Agne '15 and her Dad for driving up very late Friday night after the Spring choral concert.
Who would have thought that just over eight weeks ago, as we started our spring season, that we would enter five full teams (twenty students) in the High School Invitational Regatta? The majority of our sailors had never been on a boat before! Coach Eric made this happen. Michigan now has sixteen high school teams and DCDS is the largest team. Congratulations to all, especially Thomas Frikker '15, Skipper, and Veronica Agne '15, Crew, for taking the 2nd place medal in their division.
Our DCDS qualifying travel team of:
Kemper Hoglund '12
Chris Kojaian '12
Salvatore Mancuso '13
Austin Rivera '13
Peter Hoglund '14
Grant Gustafson '15
Thomas Frikker '15
Team members traveled to this highly competitive regatta at Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago. We made a strong effort and were able to keep pace with more advanced sailors.
Most importantly, our sailors left this event with greater knowledge, experience and confidence than they arrived with, all of which will benefit not only these sailors but the entire DCDS team. Great team work everyone!
DCDS had its first ever full team entry! Along with Thomas Frikker '15,
Salvatore Mancuso '13, and
Jason Liu '15, the rotations welcomed:
Madison Novice '15
Ashley Fernandez '15
Grant Gustafson '15
Grant Jason '14
Austin Rivera '13
Matthew Worpell '13
Thanks to Peter Hoglund '14, who substituted in for the team on Sunday.
Team racing is an exciting but difficult race strategy. Our novice addition brought talent and challenge to our rotations. We thank Coach Eric, and it was great to have all of the parent support as well. It is not about our finish, it is about what we learned and the teamwork we displayed. DCDS met new friends, both from our team and other teams too. As we build on this experience, we head to Chicago next weekend!
DCDS had a strong participation in this regatta. There were brisk winds from the NNE at nearely 20 knots and three foot waves. We are particularly proud of the skill we saw from our team. We had minimal capsizes, and those we did have were righted very quickly. One capsize in particular was at the finish line. Kemper and Tom got back in their boat so fast, it only cost them one place, scoring in 8th.
20 teams competed in the A/B rotation. DCDS placed 13th overall. Congratulations to the team of:
Salvatore Mancuso '13 Skipper
Peter Hoglund '14 Crew
Kemper Hoglund '12 Skipper
Thomas Frikker '15 Crew
We faced very tough competition from school in Minnesota, Chicago and Michigan.
As we return from our first travel regatta in Chicago, we congratulate the team of:
Kemper Hoglund '12 Skipper
Chris Kojaian '12 Crew
Salvatore Mancuso '13 Skipper
Peter Hoglund '14 Crew
Thomas Frikker '15 Skipper
Jason Liu '15 Crew
"Team Racing" is new to us, but we managed to improve throughout the weekend and had a strong finish with steadily building winds. Team racing has very different rules and strategies and is sailed on a course that is unlike any we have seen before. As we progress into the season, we are eager to test our skills again. This proves to be very exciting and challenging. Congratulations!
DCDS was excited to host the Halloween Regatta on October 29, 2011, at the Pontiac Yacht Club. We had seven schools representing Michigan from our district. All DCDS sailors competed. Kemper Hoglund '12 was entered in the Laser fleet along with the members of the 420 fleet. Finishing third in the 420 A division were Reed Lorimer '14 and Peter Hoglund '14. Salvatore Mancuso '13 and Thomas Frikker '15 placed 5th in the 420 B division. In the 420 JV division, Grayson Long '16 and Aidan Darby '16 put in a strong performance, as well as Jason Liu '15, Wade Lorimer '16, Grant Kojaian '16, Charlotte Woods '17, and Brian Liu '18.
The sixty-six entered sailors, who competed for Halloween pirate flag awards, were cheered on by coaches and many spectators, including our Headmaster Glen Shilling. Coach Eric made the chili for the pirate feast, and all the parents were involved with providing the wonderful meals during the entire day.
DCDS captured two State Championship sailing titles on October 22, 2011, at the Grosse Ile Yacht Club. Skipper Reed Lorimer '14 and Crew Peter Hoglund '14 placed first in the 420 State Championship Division A along with Skipper Salvatore Mancuso '13 and Crew Thomas Frikker '15 who placed first in the State Championship Division B. Reed and Peter scored first in 3 of 7 races, and Sal and Tom placed first in 6 of 7 races.
Coupled with Kemper Hoglund '12, skippering in the Laser division, Reed, Peter, Sal, and Tom earned second place overall honors in Michigan's inaugural State Team Sailing Championship, an impressive accomplishment in the team's first ever competitive season. Coach Eric Ellison and all team members represented DCDS with these outstanding performances in cold, windy, but sunny conditions.
The entire DCDS Sailing team traveled to Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Holland, Michigan, October 8-9 2011. Entered were five 420s, one Laser, and one Opti.

Thank you to all the parents who traveled along and showed support!
The DCDS Sailing Team of Salvatore Mancuso '13, Peter Hoglund '14, Reed Lorimer '14 and Thomas Frikker '15 along with Coach Eric Ellison left for Chicago, Belmont Harbor, on September 30 and returned on October 2. With extreme weather conditions, winds up to 30 knots and impressive waves, the regatta was cancelled on Saturday. Our team headed to the Navy Pier to watch a grade one Match Cup race similar to the America's Cup. Match racing is a battle between two boats in an elimination series. We supported our US teams and saw the finish with Keith Swinton (AUS) winning the race.
Sunday had beautiful wind conditions and DCDS placed 13/19 overall with very tough competition. Both our divisions did very well, placing top 6 in their last race. During our stay in Chicago, we visted the John Hancock Observatory, had Chicago style hot dogs, and after our visit to Wrigley Field, we ate Chicago Pizza. We were proud to represent DCDS in the Midwest Divsion of High School sailing, www.MISSA.net. Our team faced new conditions, met many friends, and are continuing to learn the art of sailing. Thank you Coach Eric!
The DCDS Sailing Team competed on September 17 and 18 in the season's first high school invitational regatta, hosted by Grosse Ile Sailing at Grosse Ile Yacht club.
101 sailors representing high schools from our division sailed in ideal sunny and windy conditions. DCDS sent two teams:
Team 1: Skipper Kemper Hoglund '12,
Crew Peter Hoglund '14 and
Skipper Salvatore Mancuso '13,
Crew Thomas Frikker '15
Team 2: Skipper Reed Lorimer '14,
Crew Aidan Darby '16 and
Skipper Wade Lorimer '16,
Crew Grant Kojaian '16
DCDS Team 1 placed 11/20 and Team 2 placed 12/20. The Mancuso-Frikker team took the third place award in their division of twenty boats. This historic event marks the first entry of a DCDS team into an officially-sanctioned sailing event.
The DCDS sailing team hosted a "trial" regatta at PYC, including many teams such as De LaSalle and Regina High Schools. Our sailors did very well as well as showcased their talents for the years to come. Good job DCDS!
